What is "Chicken Soup Hotpot"?

History

In the old days, sumo stables were poor and the lifestyle revolved around fish dishes.
The meat that is sometimes eaten is from four-legged animals.
Apparently, this was avoided because it meant "tapping your hands = losing."
Among them, chickens are considered to be auspicious because they have two legs.
It has long been cherished as one of the few luxuries and auspicious dishes.

It was during the Meiji period that hot pot began to be eaten in sumo stables. It began when the 19th Yokozuna, Dewanoumi's stable, made hot pot the main meal of their sumo stable as chanko. The etymology is said to come from the relationship between master and disciple in a sumo stable, with the master being called "chan" (father) and the disciple being called "ko" (child), and they eat together, hence the name "chanko."

This traditional taste has been passed down since 49 by the founder, a former sumo wrestler. At Edozawa, we are particular about the original chanko nabe soppu cooking method, and we strive to create dishes with a particularly strong umami flavor.
We use aged chicken to make our soup. We offer a variety of soups, including our signature soy sauce soup, miso soup, and salt soup.

Our restaurant serves hearty chanko nabe with plenty of ingredients. Because it's what sumo wrestlers eat every day, many people have the image that chanko nabe = fattening, but it's a very healthy dish that contains a good balance of vegetables, mushrooms, tofu, meat and fish, and is easy to digest because it's simmered. It warms the body and increases metabolism, so it's actually a very healthy dish.
